Las Vegas Sands to Open Online Gaming Site in the UK
Not to be deterred by the U.S. Congress’ passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement (UIGE) Act, the Las Vegas Sands has entered into an agreement with Cantor Gaming to create an online casino and poker site in the United Kingdom. The agreement will allow the Las Vegas Sands to tap into the lucrative online gambling market in Europe. While the UK and European markets are not as large as the online gambling market in the U.S. the UIGE Act effectively outlaws online gambling in America, making the U.S. market inaccessible. The UK Las Vegas Sands online casino and poker site plans to bar U.S. customers.
The site is expected to be up and running by the second quarter of 2007 and will feature the most popular casino games including baccarat, blackjack, poker and roulette. The Las Vegas Sands’ company brands Palazzo, Piazza, Sands, and The Venetian will also be featured. So far the company refuses to comment as to whether it plans to open up additional online casinos in other European countries. Bill Weidner, Las Vegas Sands’ chief executive, did comment that the deal between Cantor Gaming and Sands creates an excellent opportunity to generate greater awareness of the Las Vegas Sands global brands. “As the Internet gaming landscape continues to evolve, this effort will put us in a strong position to evaluate and react to other potential opportunities”, he said.
The Las Vegas Sands also owns The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas as well as the Sands Macao.
