"Packer Meeting Fuels Online Gambling Deal Fears"

Stop Press: Tasmania to allow Internet betting exchanges

James Packer, executive chairman of the Australian company, Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBC), announced last Monday, that after a meeting with the Tasmanian Government, it was agreed to allow the licensing of Internet betting exchanges. A British agency, Betfair, wanting a license to operate in Tasmania, will be one of the first to take advantage of the new decision. In opposition to the decision, Sue Napier, spokesperson for the racing industry, said that this move by the Tasmanian Government could severely damage Tasmania's racing industry. Napier argued that "Tasmanian racing industry will be cut loose from the Australian racing industry" by allowing the licensing of Internet betting exchanges.
