"Broadband Fuels Online Gambling Boom"
Broadband Internet connections help the popularity of online gambling.
In February 2005 alone, approximately 14 million Europeans visited and gambled
on an online gambling and sweepstake Internet site. France and Sweden registered
as the countries with the highest number of Internet gamblers. Internet gambling
is also catching on in the south of Europe, but it is still much less popular
and only 10 percent of the population of Spain and Italy has so far visited
a gambling or sweepstakes site.
As the availability of broadband technology increases, so Internet gambling
is becoming more and more popular across Europe.
Another country that has been hit by online gambling fever is Britain, with
the increasing availability of broadband, once again, fueling the Internet
gambling industry’s growth. The Internet research company, Nielsen/NetRatings,
reports that 3.2 million Britons visited gambling sites in February. This amounts
to a 45% increase over the number of gambling site visitors last year at the
same time.
According to the Nielsen/NetRatings, the range of gambling, betting and online
casino sites has fueled the incredible growth in the UK’s gambling industry,
although the National Lottery still remains the most popular gambling site.
During February 2005, over 1.3 million visitors accessed the National Lottery
Site. Nielsen/NetRatings studied the top Internet gambling websites accessed
by UK gamblers and their results are as follows:
The National Lottery
William Hill
Partypoker.com
Ladbrokes
Pacific Poker
Cyberslotz
The Gaming Club
Golden Palace Online Casino
Vernons
An Internet analyst for Europe, Gabrielle Prior, said that survey results
indicate that UK gamblers like the speed and convenience of betting online.
Three quarters of the online gamblers in the UK use high a speed Internet and
spend an average of 20 minutes online. Users with slower connections spend
an average of 29 minutes online.
