“Online Gambling Poses Huge Concern”
Authorities in China are taking action against the burgeoning
online gambling industry.
As the online gambling industry rapidly grows, the public in China are
playing more and more. In a recent statement, the Beijing People’s
Prosecutors Office reported that 35% of all gambling convictions issued
are for online gambling.
Online gambling is very convenient to play and less costly than playing
in a brick and mortar casino. It is also harder to detect and track. A
great deal of the online gambling in China involves betting on soccer
games, although gambling cases brought to court have included traditional
gambling involving card games. So far this year, the courts have heard
17 gambling cases with 56 people involved. They have been charged with
online gambling crimes.
Last year, a man who had raked in 140,000 in profits .was arrested in
the Yangpu District for organizing online soccer betting. He had set up
a local agency for a Taiwan-based gambling company, which ran the Baoyong
Website.
Zaisheng, a native of Taiwan was the leader of an online gambling gang
and was the first person to be convicted of a gambling crime in Shanghai.
He was sentenced to 2 ½ years in jail by the Shanghai Number 1
Intermediate People’s Court.
Because it has no time or space limitations and profits are higher at
online gambling casinos than profits from conventional casinos, Internet
gambling appeals to many gamblers, according to Zhu Bochen, a spokesman
for the People’s Prosecutor’s Office.
