“French Monopoly Seeks Ban on British Online Bookies”
Internet gambling may be banned by a 100 year old law!
Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU), a government-sanctioned gambling monopoly,
is using a law enacted in 1891, over a hundred years ago, to try and stop
foreign Internet gambling from poaching on its territory.
The law was originally meant as a means of preventing dishonest businessmen
from establishing and operating gambling casinos while allowing the establishment
of a government sanctioned gambling operator, PMU, which was considered
to be more viable option than a prohibition on gambling.
The companies targeted for the suit are widespread. Among the better
known are Sporting Bet and Stanley International, both British based,
Bet and Win, a Gibraltar company and Mr. Bookmaker who is based in Malta.
They have all vowed to stand together and fight the attempted ban, their
argument being that that it is in violation of international trading agreements.
