"China Hits Net Gambling Hard"
1,300 people arrested in Shanghai in Internet gambling raids
Chinese law enforcement agencies detained more than 1,300 people in Shanghai
involved in Internet gambling. This was part of China’s ongoing battle
to stem the growing Internet gambling trade in the country. The raid targeted
all the places where Chinese authorities believed Internet gambling was taking
place, including private homes, net cafes and nightclubs
Chinese officials claim that the Taiwan-based gambling business has
been working with known Chinese criminals for almost a year now. In fact,
in the most recent raid, two of the people arrested out of the 1,300 are
on China’s national “most-wanted” list and are known
to have ties with illegal online gambling businesses.
This was not the first raid on Internet gambling operators in China.
Earlier this year, six hundred people involved in online gambling were
arrested and CNY23m (1.5m Pounds Sterling) was seized. Also, approximately
220 people were arrested in a series of raids on a “clandestine
Internet-based gambling company”.
